October 25, 2014: A Wealth of Information

Most people have both income and wealth needs. They need money to spend now, as well as money to spend during retirement. The problem is that most people spend all of their time focused on the income-side. They work thousands of hours every year to pay today’s bills, yet they spend little to no time thinking about their longer term needs. Despite the fact that the markets are actually down after inflation since 2000, people still buy in to the “buy and hold” mindset, and that is costing them dearly. That will only get worse as market  volatility increases. In addition, it is important to learn how to make your money work for you; to trade dollars for dollars, not just hours for dollars if you want to achieve your financial goals. All these topics are the subject of today’s show.

October 18, 2014: Failure Is Not An Option

How’s that Netflix stop-loss working out? Last week Netflix gapped down $100 (about 25%) overnight. If you had a stop-loss you took a really big hit, but not if you had a put option for protection. In these volatile times, options can be your best friend, if you know how to use them properly. Check out this week’s show to learn more!

October 11, 2014: Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?

Have been out for a few weeks, so today we started off by revisiting our last show which was recorded on 9/18 and aired starting 9/20. In that show I expressed that the market was really laboring to continue up, and that while downside risk had been a major issue for some time, it appeared that the upside bias may be ending and the next move could be down. Since that time, the market has fallen about 4%.

Some have asked how we knew this. We didn’t. There is no certainty in the market. However, the NASDAQ was in a major supply zone, the Russell had been weakening for some time and when the Fed came out with about the most positive news possible for the market, it was unable to hold its gains. All of this suggested weakness.

The question is, what comes next? Again, it is unknowable. At some point the market will fall very hard (50-60% would not surprise me). Is this the start of that crash? I don’t know. All we know is that to succeed in the market we need to develop a hypothesis about the market, put probability on our side, and then manage risk and add a little leverage. How do you do this? Check out this week’s show to find out!
